Cinema of Latvia dates back to 1910 when the first short films were made. The first cinematic screening in Riga took place on may 28, 1896. By 1914 all major cities in Latvia had cinemas where newsreels, documentaries and mostly foreign short films were shown.

Two years after the movie was invented by Lumiere brothers, on 22 January 1898 Sergei Eisenstein was born in Riga.


1.1. History. Before the Soviet occupation. (До советской оккупации)

The first feature of the Latvian Lācplēsis film Director Alexander Rusteiķis was released in 1930. The fishermans son, 1939, directed by Vilis Lapenieks Janis is a Latvian classical, the end of the movie before the Second world war.

Podnieks four films received a prize of Big Kristaps for best documentary of the year.
