★ History of the Midlands Merit League

The Midlands Merit League was a summer rugby league tournament in England. In its final two years, it was known as the RL Merit League.

It has been replaced by Rugby, Midlands, North West merit League and Yorkshire and the Humber merit League.

1.1. History. Background. (Фон)

In 1895, several clubs in the North of England split from the Rugby football Union RFU, governing body of Rugby in England, the issue of the cost of the player.

This led to the Great schism, which resulted in Rugby becoming two separate sports: Rugby, administered by the RFU and Rugby League administered by the Rugby football League, as both games have evolved different sets of rules.

Although Rugby spread abroad, sanctioned by the RFU made it more difficult for the sport to expand beyond their "land" in the traditional counties of Yorkshire, Lancashire and Cumberland.

1.2. History. Earlier non-heartland competitions and the Rugby League Conference. (Ранее не Хартленд конкурсы и конференции лиги регби)

The southern conference League began a 10-team pilot League in 1997 for command of the English Midlands and the South of England after the collapse of the various provinces, leagues. Another significant factor leading to the creation of the conference was that professional clubs have moved for the summer season last year and thus interest in the sport in winter was reduced. The rejection of amateurism opponent of the sport of Rugby in 1995 meant that it is now possible for players of Rugby Union to play Rugby during the off-season without risking to get banned from Rugby. It gave not the heartland clubs a large pool of players.

It was renamed the conference of Rugby League in 1998 and began to expand, by 2005 there were 90 teams from all over England and Wales compete in the conference.
