Pearly Everlasting

★ Pearly everlasting

Anaphalis is a genus of herbaceous and woody flowering plants in the family Asteraceae whose members are commonly known as pearl or pearly everlasting. There are about 110 species, the vast majority came from Central and South Asia. There is one species native to North America, which is quite well known and popular in the culture, namely the Western pearly everlasting.

The name probably comes from the common practice of drying the flowers and stems for decoration winter months. This plant was used by native Americans for various medicinal purposes.

Two species, A. javanica and A. longifolia can be found on the slopes of the mountains on the island of Java in Indonesia. Anaphalis javanica, also known as the Javanese Edelweiss, is currently an endangered species.
