★ Orlik Castle

The castle Orlik is set in a castle, 500 metres North-East of the village of Orlik nad Vltavou, in the Northern part of the district of Písek South Bohemian region of the Czech Republic. The original position of the castle on the cliff, at a height of 60 m above the Vltava valley, was altered in connection with the creation of the Orlik reservoir in 1954-62, and the castle now, just a few meters above the water level.

The meaning of the name Orlik comes from the word "young eagle" Czech: an eagle. It is often assumed that this castle would have resembled an eagle or nest perched on a rocky cliff above a bend of the river.

1. History. (История)

Orlik was founded as a Royal fortress at the Ford of the river Vltava in the second half of the 13th century, probably Peemysl Otakar II, although in the Middle ages it fell into the hands of noble families and its ownership changed repeatedly. From 1408 in Zmrzlik of Svojsin family owned it, and during the Hussite captain Jan žižka of Trocnov stayed in the castle. In 1508 the castle burned down and was rebuilt into a Chateau in the Renaissance style by the new owners, the lords of Svamberk. In 1623 the Eggenbergs acquired orlík, and in 1717 it was inherited by the Schwarzenbergs. At the beginning of the 19th century it became their main residence. In 1802, the castle was burned, and during the subsequent repairs, the fourth floor was added to the building. The most famous member of the family was field Marshal Karl Philip Prince Schwarzenberg who defeated Napoleon in the battle of Leipzig in 1813. The current romantic Gothic appearance dates from 1849 until 1860, when a partial reconstruction of the building was designed by Bernard Gruber. The early Gothic style castle of orlík was confiscated by the Communist regime after 1948, but in 1990-e years has returned to Schwarzenberg.

Access to the castle is a stone bridge over the moat. Rise three round towers on the main facade, one of which is the original, built in the 14th century. The entrance to the castle, carved into the rock leads to a trapezoidal courtyard with arcades on the ground floor. The oldest building is a former Palace, which dates from the 14th century and forms the North side of the yard.

The interiors are mainly in the Empire style, from the first half of the 19th century. In Lovecky Sal hunters hall, with quadripartite ribbed vaults, originally Gothic, and the chapel, and also from the Gothic period, has a storage capacity. From an artistic point of view, the most valuable rooms are the state rooms on the first floor, the great and Small halls of the knights, the hunting hall, blue and Empire saloons, library, and the gun corridor. The interiors are decorated in period style and feature the art collection of the family.
