★ Pincushions

Scabiosa is a genus in the honeysuckle family of flowering plants. Many of the species of this genus have common names that include the word scabious, but some plants commonly known as scabious are currently classified in related genera such as Knautia and Succisa, at least some of them were previously placed in the Scabious. Another common name for this genus is pincushion flowers.

1. Etymology. (Этимология)

The common name of scabious derives from the traditional use of herbs in folk medicine for the treatment of scabies, a disease that causes severe itching sensation.

2. Description. (Описание)

Some species of scabiosa are annuals, others perennials. Some herbaceous plants, other rootstocks woody. The leaves of most species are slightly hairy and partially divided into lobes, but not smooth, and some species have simple leaves. Flowers are in inflorescences in the form of heads, each head contains many small florets, each floret folded into membranous, saucer-shaped bract. The calyx has five sepals in the form of an awn almost as long as petals. After the flowers fell, cups, together with the bracts form a spiky ball that can be a reason for "pincushion" common name. The calyx is persistent and remains as the crown on the fruit after it is shed. The Corolla has four or five petals edged with a narrow funnel with the furry throat of the funnel was slightly longer than the lobes. Blossoms have four stamens in each pipe and sticks. Each fruit has only one seed.

Several types of heads sessile, but in most species they are on their own at a high peduncle.

Scabiosa species and varieties differ in colour of their flowers, but most of them are purple-blue, lilac or cream.

4. Distribution. (Распределение)

Representatives of this genus are native to Africa, Europe and Asia. Some species of scabiosa, especially S. small scabious columbaria and sweet Mediterranean scabiosa S. atropurpurea varieties developed for gardeners.

In 1782, a mysterious pale yellow scabious, called Scabiosa Trenta, was described by Belsazar Hacquet, an Austrian physician, botanist and mountaineer, in his work plantae alpinae Carniolicae. He became an inspiration for later botanists and mountaineers open the Julian Alps, Julius Kugy especially. Later, Austrian botanist Marilaun Anton Kerner von proved Belsazar Hacquet had not found a new species, but the sample is already known Submediterranean Cephalaria leucantha.

5. Ecology. (Экология)

Scabious flowers are nectar rich and attractive to many insects, including butterflies and moths like six-spot Burnet. Scabiosa species are food plants by the larvae of some Lepidoptera species such as grey Pug moth.
