★ Rapier & Dagger
Rapier and Dagger is a set of rules for pencil-and-paper fencing or miniature fencing duels published by Fantasy Games Unlimited in 1978.
1. Publication history. (История публикаций)
In 1976, Wilf Backhouse and Edward E. Simbalist created the fantasy role-playing game Chivalry & Sorcery C& s, published by FGU. Backhouse and Simbalist subsequently published several supplements for C& s, but rapier and Dagger, published in 1978, was not one of them. This 24-page booklet, written by Backhouse and illustrated by Simbalist, was a treatise on the history of fencing and a set of General rules under which two players could participate in a role-playing duel.
The installation of the rapier and dagger and the styles of fencing used date back to France in the 1600s. there are two sets of rules: simpler rules for dueling with pencil and paper, and a more complex set of rules for use with 25 mm or 54 mm miniatures.
2. Gameplay. (Игровой процесс)
Rapier and Dagger is a system of combat rules that can be played as a shootout, or in combination with fantasy role-playing game systems.
As a first step, players create a duelist with abilities generated by random dice rolls.
Since the rule system is universal, the Rapier and Dagger can be used with any fantasy role-playing system.
3. Reception. (Прием)
In the February-March 1979 edition of white dwarf # 12, don Turnbull liked the production value of the pamphlet, calling it "beautiful." However, he found even the simple rules for pencil and paper doubles quite complicated "and noted that with novice players," duels can take some time to resolve. Even for those for whom reading and understanding the rules are second nature, these rules are not easy to digest and put together."He recommended that players try the simpler pencil and paper rules before moving on to the more complex thumbnail rules. As soon as he learned the rules, Turnbull discovered that the action was quite real, more so than FSUs other dueling game, En Garde! He gave the game a score of 6 out of 10, concluding: "the rules are easily adaptable to existing games such as En Garde, Chivalry & Sorcery or even D& D If you want to make hand-to-hand combat more realistic between opponents using swords. I suspect, however, that they will be used more often on their own – and they provide the basis for some entertaining and thought-provoking duels. Recommended."
