★ Wraith: The Oblivion – Afterlife
Wraith: The Oblivion-Afterlife is a virtual reality horror video game developed by Swedish Studio Fast Travel Games. The action takes place in a World of Darkness and is based on the 1994 white Wolf Publications tabletop role-playing game Wraith: The Oblivion. In the game, the player must take on the role of a Ghost who has recently died as they explore Barclays mansion and uncover the secrets of the afterlife. Its made as an exploration of what it means to be human, and is influenced by horror games like Amnesia: The Dark Descent и Alien: Isolation.
1. General information. (Основная информация)
Wraith: The Oblivion-Afterlife is a horror game played with a virtual reality VR headset. The game is narrative-oriented and focused on exploration and stealth in a first-person perspective. As the player continues to explore the game world, the main character grows as a Ghost and discovers new abilities that can be used to physically interact with the environment. Although not the focus of the game, it also has combat capabilities.
The game takes place in Barclays modern mansion in a World of Darkness, an urban fantasy setting shared with games such as Vampire: The Masquerade и Werewolf: The Apocalypse, where monsters secretly exist in human society. It forces the player to assume the role of a Ghost – a recently deceased spirit of humans – who reveals the secrets of the afterlife after having died in a mansion. At the beginning of the game, the main character wakes up without remembering how they died, and heads to the mansion with his shadow – an ominous voice that represents the ghosts of self-destructive parts.
2. Development. (Развитие)
Afterlife is developed by the Swedish Studio Fast Travel Games, directed by Erik Odeldahl, designed by Daniel Kilgren Callander, and developed by Casper Renman. It is based on White Wolf Publications 1994 tabletop role-playing game Wraith: The Oblivion, it is the first time that Wraith: The Oblivion has been adapted into a video game, and the first World of Darkness VR game. However, it is still intended to be accessible to players who are new to Wraith: the Oblivion and World of Darkness, intended to be enjoyable to fans of plot horror in General and serve as an introduction to the setting.
Odeldahl was influenced by horror games such as Amnesia: The Dark Descent 2010 and Alien: Isolation 2014, and felt that their horror type would work well in a VR game, the developers described the horror design as psychological and "under the skin" rather than relying on jump scares. Odeldahl wanted to create this game as a World of Darkness, and thought that Ghost: oblivion was particularly well suited, because of its mysticism and the richness of its setting. VR features have influenced game design: while other research-based games often allow the player to find and read documents throughout the game world to learn backstory, this would be less feasible in a VR game. The developers also discovered that cinematic videos usually dont work well in VR, and had to find another way to handle them.
Although Paradox Interactive, owner of the World of Darkness series, were the ones who approached Fast Travel Games about developing Wraith: The Oblivion game, Odeldahl had thought about adapting Wraith before and wrote a concept paper for adapting Wraith video games when the Fast Travel games were formed, although Afterlife eventually used a different concept. Since he saw Wraith: The Oblivion as about personal horror, it was also used as a starting point for Afterlife s story, with the game seeking to explore what it means to be human, allowing the player to take on the perspective of a monster. The game is not designed to follow all the rules of gameplay from a Board game, but uses its own knowledge.
The game was announced in June 2020 with a teaser trailer, and is scheduled to be fully unveiled on Gamescom in August 2020 with a gameplay trailer. It will be released for several VR platforms, including PlayStation VR, Oculus, and SteamVR, on a yet-to-be-announced date.
3. Reception. (Прием)
Destructoid liked the concept of the game, hoping that the developers will be able to implement it, and Rock, Paper, Shotgun found it an interesting game for those who know how to handle horror in virtual reality. FZ was looking forward to this game, calling VR horror an effective concept.
