★ Danae (Annibale Carracci)
"Danae" is a painting by Annibale Carracci, painted in oil on canvas in 1600-1605 and destroyed during world war II. In the Royal collection of Windsor castle, a preparatory study of autographs has been preserved. Prints, but not colorized copies of it are known.
The earliest mention of this work belongs to the Pamphili family collection inventory of 1652. According to Giovanni Pietro Belloris 1672 Vite de pittori, scultori e architetti moderni and Scannellis 1657 Il microcosmo della pittura, Christina of Sweden admired the work while visiting the collections of Camillo Francesco Maria Pamphilis, and in 1652 he gave it to her. At that time it belonged to the Odescalchi family, but when the collection was divided, it became part of the Orleans collection at the Palais Royal in Paris. Like much of the Orleans collection, it was acquired by an English collector and later entered Bridgewater house in London, where it and other works by Carracci, such as the lament, were destroyed by bombing in 1941.
Its attribution is accepted by all art historians except Hans Tietze 1880-1954 and Donald Posner 1931-2005, with the former suggested by Domenichino and the latter by Francesco Albani. The composition had a great influence on later interpretations of the subject, such as the works of Orazio Gentileschi and Rembrandt.
