★ Lemont Central Grade School
Lemont Central elementary school is a former school building located at 410 McCarthy Road in Lemont, Illinois. The school was built in 1869 to replace the first Lemont school, which opened in 1836, when the area was still largely rural. For the construction of the school, local quarried limestone was used, at that time limestone production was one of the main industries of the city. Architect John Barnes of Joliet designed the Victorian building. As the citys population grew significantly during the construction of the Chicago sanitary and ship canal in the 1890s, an extension was added to the school in 1896 to accommodate additional students. The school operated until construction safety issues forced it to close in 1974, at which time it was the oldest continuously operating school in the state. Since then, the building has been converted into condominiums.
The building was added to the national register of historic places on March 7, 1975.
