1. Early life and education. (Ранняя жизнь и образование)
Guo was born in 1956 to a family of military officers of the Central government in Beijing. Her father was persecuted during the Cultural revolution, and died of cirrhosis of the liver in 1968 after being denied medical treatment. Guo was sent "down into the countryside" to do work in Wuhan, returning to Beijing in 1980.
Guo received her doctorate in folklore studies from Beijing normal University in 1990, writing a dissertation on Chinese folk culture, rituals, and religion. She also entered the Chinese Academy of social Sciences in 2000. In 2000-2001, she also did postdoctoral research in anthropology at Harvard.
2. Career and views. (Карьера и взгляды)
Guo is a Professor in the Department of sociology at Tsinghua University. Her research focuses in particular on rural communities, the rights and interests of their citizens, and the relationship between the state and society in China.
In 2013, Guo published a book based on her research of oral histories in JI village in Shaanxi province, entitled the peasants narrative: how can suffering become history?". The book was published in Hong Kong and banned in mainland China.
Guo is a critic of the Chinese Communist party and a proponent of liberal reforms in Chinas political system. She frequently posts her criticisms of the government on social media, including through her WeChat and Sina Weibo accounts, the latter of which she claims were blocked seventy-four times between 2010 and 2018. Its main criticism of the party is the argument that its political system considers citizens not as people, but as "utilitarian objects" subject to management and control.
Guo was an outspoken supporter of Zhang Xurun, another Tsinghua Professor who was suspended from teaching in 2019 after publishing a public essay critical of XI Jinping.
