★ Rural Walks

Country walks is an early work of childrens literature by Charlotte Turner Smith, first published in 1795. The book was intended to introduce children to both poetry and natural history, partly inspired by Anna Laetitia barbots evenings at home. Like its other educational works for children, it was intended primarily for girls, since boys had access to formal schooling, which made such books less necessary for them.

1. Composition. (Композиция)

Smith was first a successful poet and then a novelist, writing sentimental and Gothic novels, but sales declined as her Pro-revolutionary political views made her less popular. In later years, she began writing academic papers, although publishers paid less for them because they were less risky. Country walks was her first educational book, written in part to earn money for medical care for one of her daughters, who was pregnant and ill. Smith offered this book to her publisher, William Davis, in a letter dated October 2, 1794. Since July 1794, she had been thinking about writing a textbook, and decided on the content of rural walks, based on the fact that it was difficult to find books for her youngest daughter, who was twelve years old.

2. Content. (Содержание)

The book is framed by the story of Mrs. Woodfield and her teenage niece, Caroline Cecil. Caroline was spoiled by her upbringing in London, but when her mother dies, she is sent to the country to be cared for by her fathers sister, Mrs. Woodfield. Mrs. Woodfield was a poor widow who was supposed to be Smiths own understudy. The book unfolds in the form of conversations between Mrs. Woodfield, her two daughters, and Caroline as they walk through the countryside. Throughout the book, Mrs. Woodfield teaches Caroline compassion for the unfortunate and appreciation of nature."
