Theater for dreamers is a 2020 literary fantasy novel by Polly Samson, which entered the Sunday Times bestseller list at number 2 after being released in April 2020. It is a fictional account of life on the Greek island of Hydra in the 1960s featuring real characters who lived there at the time, including Leonard Cohen, Charmian Clift, and George Johnston.

Erica befriends and then oversees a Hydra circle of talented but troubled Bohemians, including fictionalized versions of famous real-life characters Charmian Clift, George Johnston, Axel Jensen, Marianne Ilen, Gregory Corso, Gordon Merrick, and a young, yet-to-be-discovered Leonard Cohen.

The novel entered the Sunday Times bestseller list at number 2 after being released in April 2020. The book also received positive reviews, with Alex Preston describing it in the Observer as "a blissful escapism and powerful meditation on art and sexuality,” Alex Peake-Tomkinson calling it” supremely accomplished" in the spectator, and Susie faye in the financial times commenting that "Samson is an extremely sensual writer who conjures up the blue sky, the smell of wild herbs, the bright splash of bougainvillea. After publishing theater for dreamers, Samson wrote an article for the Guardians books section about its inspiration for the novel, and another about Hydra setting novels for the Guardians travel section. She also wrote an article about George Johnston and Hydra for the Financial Times.
The publication was also supposed to be accompanied by live events in April 2020 in Manchester, Birmingham and London, which will be attended by Samson and her husband, musician David Gilmour. These events were delayed due to the blockage caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Instead, Samson and Gilmore broadcast a weekly live episode of” the trapped family from a shed at their home, along with their family. These included readings and q & a sessions,as well as musical performances from Gilmore. The audiobook "theater for dreamers" was released by WF Howes on June 25, 2020. The audiobook is narrated by Polly Samson and was produced by David Gilmour, who also provided the score and used the audiobook to debut his first new single in five years, "Yes, I Have Ghosts" featuring the couples daughter, Gypsy. After the audiobooks were released, the times published an interview with Samson and Gilmore about the audiobook, as well as an editorial praising the "innovation" of "merging music with audiobooks" and concluding: "the Gilmore family should be congratulated for pointing the way forward."
