The 100 HP Renault V-12 engine was developed on the basis of the earlier 90 HP Renault V-12. The cylinder head was attached to the cylinder with a copper-asbestos washer, and then secured with a cross-shaped clip, which was attached to the crankcase with four long pins. The air flow for cooling the cylinders was created by a fan driven from the rear end of the crankshaft. The fan forced air into a metal-covered chamber between two rows of cylinders, which then exited the body through narrow gaps between the cylinders, passing through the cooling fins of the cylinders.
A single camshaft was located between two rows of cylinders and actuated the intake and exhaust valves of both rows of cylinders, with each valve actuated by a separate Cam on the camshaft. The intake and exhaust valves were positioned vertically against each other in the side pocket of the cylinder head on the side of the combustion chamber, with the intake valve located below the exhaust valve. The intake valve was operated directly from the camshaft via a pushrod, and the exhaust valve was operated via a pushrod and rocker arm. The propeller was mounted directly on the camshaft, which was driven from the crankshaft through a gearbox consisting of cylindrical gears.
The lower part of the crankcase served as an oil reservoir. The pressure oil lubrication system was fed by a gear pump located at the lowest point of the crankcase. The oil pump was driven along a vertical Shaft from the camshaft by screw gears.
The crankshaft was supported by five intermediate plain bearings and two outer ball bearings. Unlike their V-8 predecessors, the V-12 engines had driving and driven connecting rods instead of side-mounted connecting rods on a single crank axle. This design feature was retained on later Renault 80 HP V-8 and Renault 130 HP V-12 aircraft engines. The pistons were made of steel and fitted with three cast-iron rings.
On one side of the crankcase, a double carburetor was installed, with each cylinder of the carburetor feeding one row of cylinders. Ignition was provided by two Bosch magnets, and each magneto separately served one row of cylinders. Two magnets were mounted transversely on the top of the camshaft at the end of the screw. The drive shafts of the magnetic cores were connected together and driven from the camshaft via helical gears.
It was said that the engine produces up to 110 HP at 1800 rpm.
