Map of the Soul: 7 ~ The Journey ~ is the fourth Japanese Studio album by South Korean boy band BTS, released on July 14, 2020. This is the bands first full-length Japanese offering in two years since 2018s Face Yourself. The album contains Japanese versions of songs from their albums Love Yourself: Answer, Map of the Soul: Persona and Map of the Soul: 7, as well as four new original Japanese tracks: "Intro: Calling", lead single "Stay Gold", "Your eyes tell" and "Outro: The Journey". The previously released 2019 single "Lights" was also included.
1. Background and pre-release. (Предыстория и предварительный релиз)
Billboard Japan first reported news of a potential Japanese album on March 26, 2020, when it announced that a new BTS song called Stay Gold "had been chosen as the theme for the then – upcoming Japanese TV drama spiral Labyrinth-a DNA forensic investigation by Rasen no Meikyu. Billboard also stated that the song will be part of the bands"4th Japanese album, which is scheduled to be released this summer". In response to additional reports made in April that the Japanese version of" On from Map of the Soul: 7 will also be included, Big Hit Entertainment later confirmed that the album will be released in July, and more information will be provided after the official schedule is completed.
On may 7, the official title of the album, Map of the Soul: 7 ~ The Journey ~ and a release date of July 14 were announced, along with a full track listing of 13 songs and detailed information about the various physical versions that will be available for purchase, along with accompanying bonuses. The track list includes Japanese versions of the songs "On", "Black Swan", "Make It Right" and "Dionysus", as well as four new original Japanese songs: "Intro: Calling", "Stay Gold", "Your eyes tell" and "Outro: The Journey", as well as BTS third original Japanese single "Lights", released earlier in July 2019. "Your eyes tell" is a ballad co-written by BTS member Jungkook, it also serves as the official soundtrack to the Japanese romantic film Your Eyes tell, Released on October 23. The first concept photo of the band was also published: a monochrome image of the band in black suits sitting on a stage with a curtain in the background. The albums title reflects its theme, which reflects BTS seven-year journey since their debut in 2013, during which they experienced "many joys, successes, difficulties and challenges", as well as their "search for an answer to a journey that will never end". In keeping with this, the lead single "Stay Gold "conveys the message that" the world may not be full of good things, but please dont lose your sparkle."Physical pre-orders for Japan, South Korea and other territories began on may 8, and pre-orders for the United States began on June 11 and 15.
Universal Music Japan released the music video with audio snippets of "On", Boy With Luv "and" Stay Gold on its YouTube channel on may 14, and the video received more than 880.000 views within a week of its release. The second concept image of the band was published on may 22 and depicted the band in pastel colors on a colorful 2D-illustrated background. On may 28, album cover photos were released showing the official artwork for each of the album releases. A series of seven additional individual teaser images was posted online from June 12 to 18. These solo photos had the same monochromatic visual theme as the first group concept photo. The release of the two-part web-movie BTS Music Journey was announced on June 5 as a gift to Japanese fans of the band. It will be available for limited viewing only in Japan, on a special website bts-mapofthesoul7.jp, via the Brave web browser, which will also feature a unique BTS-style home screen. The first part was published on June 20 and contained a 24-minute interview with the band, in which BTS discussed their thoughts on the new album and its creation, revealed never-before-shared "secret stories" and "reminisced with fans about the last seven years of memories". The second part, which includes interviews with divisions, will be released at the end of July.
Global digital pre-release of the album began on June 19 on several online platforms, the same day as the digital pre-release of "Stay Gold". "Stay Gold" debuted at number nine on the Billboards Bubbling Under Hot 100 chart and at number one on the global digital song sales chart. Forbes described it as a calming, uplifting track.mixing upbeat hip-hop rhythms on the verses and power-pop production on the choruses, and "is a comforting pop blanket with its zooming, billowing hook encouraging listeners to stay Golden by "delivering inspirational words at a time when many need it." BTS appeared on TBS Japan CDTV Live! Live! On June 22, there will be a pre-recorded premiere performance of the song "Stay Gold" and a brief interview to promote the album. The music video for "Stay Gold" was released on the official Big Hits YouTube channel on June 26, and an exclusive video message to the bands fans was aired during the live countdown to the online premiere, one minute before the release. As of July 10, the video has received more than 66 million views.
On July 1, MTV Japan announced a special programming schedule with BTS select content blocks that began airing on its network on July 9 and will continue throughout the month to commemorate the release of new albums. On July 5, TV Tokyo aired an exclusive 55-minute in-depth interview with the band called BTS Journey: ~Journey of 7~. The program is broadcast on six channels TXN for an audience in Tokyo, Osaka, Aichi Prefecture, Setati, Hokkaido and Kyushu. Commenting on the full-length program aired for BTS, The Japan Dong-A Ilbo wrote: "famous Japanese singers rarely go on one special broadcast before their return," and noted the increased interest of domestic media in the band recently. Yunika Vision launched a half-hour special feature of seven BTS music videos on its screens in front of Seibu-Shinjuku station from July 6 to 12, this feature was also available for mobile viewing with high-quality audio through the "VISION a" app. The first audio preview of "Your eyes tell" was shown on July 9, and the song was featured in the extended trailer for the film of the same name. BTS conducted the premiere performance of "Your eyes tell" Live on CDTV! Live! from July 13, broadcast. The next day, they visited NTV Sukkiri for another interview and performance of "Stay Gold". Universal Music Japan uploaded spots second music video on July 12.
Upcoming Japanese TV appearances include NTVs Buzz Rhythm 02 on July 17 and NHKS SONGS on July 18 for extended interviews and performances of "Black Swan" and "Stay Gold". This will be BTS first appearance on songs in two years.
