The station first went on the air on August 17, 1965, it is considered THE first regional tvri station, as well as the first local television station in Indonesia. The first broadcast is the 20th anniversary of Indonesias independence, dedicated to the speech of then Deputy Governor Paku Alam VIII. instead of being founded by the TVRI Foundation, the Foundation that oversees TVRI from its inception in 1962 until the late 1990s, TVRI Yogyakarta was founded by the Radio Directorate of the Ministry of information. Ir. Devabrata became the first station chief. In the first few years, the station was not part of the TVRI network, but rather an independent station.
TVRI Yogyakarta was originally broadcast from Jalan Hayam Wuruk, Yogyakarta. Having received land assistance from the then Governor Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono IX, the studio transmitter tower station occupies a new location on Jalan Magelang-km. 4.5 Sleman Regency, covering an area of 4 hectares.
At first TVRI Yogyakarta was broadcast three times a week, for two hours each. At that time, the broadcast range was still limited to areas that could be reached with a 10 kW VHF transmitter, as well as a black-and-white broadcast format. In 1973, the station began broadcasting every day.
Since 2005, the station name and logo have included the Jogja brand from Governor Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono X handwriting used for jogja Never Ending Asia tourism branding, thus the name TVRI Jogja on-air is used.
In early November 2008, a new transmission tower was built in Patuk to expand its broadcast coverage. This was done due to topographical factors in Gunungkidul and Kulonprogo regencies, resulting in some regions not being able to receive TVRI Yogyakarta broadcasts until 2009. In addition, given the new transmitting equipment and the declining quality of the old ones in Jalan Magelang, on March 10, 2010, VHF channel 8 was used only for local programming. In August 2014, the VHF channel was closed.
In March 2015, the new brand Jogja Istimewa Jogja is Special was introduced, the logo of which follows the new brand. Following the rebranding of TVRI in March 2019, currently THE tvri Jogja brand is no longer used as an on-air name and is only used as alternative branding.
