★ Anna Davenport Raines

Anna Mitchell Davenport Raines was an American philanthropist and founding Vice President of the United daughters of the Confederacy. Later, she served as the honorary General President of the organization and was the guardian of The honorary southern cross.

In 1892, Raines responded to a call from the Savannah Confederate veterans Association for women of The city to create their own auxiliary organization. She was elected Secretary of the womens auxiliary society. At a meeting in December 1893, Raines proposed that the auxiliary form become a permanent organization, and went on to change the name of the daughters of the Confederacy. The order was formed, and reince was elected the first President. She didnt know that at this time, in Tennessee, Caroline Meriwether Goodlett was organizing another society called the daughters of the Confederacy. Goodlett and Raines were aware of each others organizations and brought them together by inviting similar sororities in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Missouri to form the National Association of the daughters of the Confederacy. Raines was elected first Vice President of the United daughters of the Confederacy, with Nashville as the first Chapter and Savannah as the second Chapter. Reins presented the Constitution and the Charter, as well as the design of the logo of the organization. At the second annual Convention in Atlanta in 1895, the name of the organization was officially changed to the United daughters of the Confederacy. Later, she served as honorary General President of the Udks and was the Keeper of the honorary southern cross. She and Goodlett were known for their fierce rivalry, and both considered themselves the original founders of the United daughters of the Confederacy.

Raines died on January 21, 1915, and was buried in the family plot at Laurel grove cemetery in Savannah.
