Sherlock Holmes and his companion Dr. Watson are investigating a case of attempted murder inspired by the legend of a terrifying, diabolical dog of a supernatural nature on Dartmoor in Devon in Englands West country.

Produced by Tiger aspect productions, it was the third adaptation of the story for the Bi-bi-si, it was shown on BBC-BBC one on Boxing Day, 2002. It was directed by David Attwood, and adapted by Allan Cubitt. The film stars: Richard Roxburgh as Sherlock Holmes and Ian HART as Dr. Watson. HART back to play Watson in the 2004 TV film Sherlock Holmes and the case of the silk stocking, also written by Cubitt. The dog was a mixture of animatronics and cgi and was created by the same team, Crawley creatures and Framestore, that provided the dinosaurs for "walking with dinosaurs" and "the Lost world".

This version differs from the novel in several instances. The film is set in the period of the original tale was published, in contrast to when it was originally installed. depicts a seance conducted by Dr. Mortimers wife. This scene never appeared in the original novel, although the scene really appeared in the 1939 Basil Rathbone version of the film.

Richard washers from science fiction, horror and fantasy film review called the film "one of the best adaptations of Sherlock Holmes screen today, and, perhaps best of all adaptations of the hound of the Baskervilles that we have." Pamela Troy CultureVulture.net wrote: "Theres a lot that may outrage fans of the original novel, but it is, nevertheless, respectful, interesting, and worthwhile adaptation." Charles Prepolec of the Sherlock Holmes fansite BakerStreetDozen.com wrote: "in the end, this is a compelling, if somewhat infuriating, film to watch. Not a Holmes movie, and, of course, is not the best version of this story, but its fascinating television drama." A.V. club called the film "a very interesting, if not totally successful adaptation".
