In the late 1930s, in Ferrara, a group of young friends getting together for lunch in the tennis and happy times. Some of them are Italian Jews and a rising tide of fascism has imposed all the anti-Semitic restrictions in their lives. The two young Finzi-Continis, Alberto and his sister Micol, have organized a tennis tournament. Oblivious to the threats around them, life still seems to be Sunny at the large Finzi-Continis property, keeping the rest of the world in fear.

Among the visitors there are people fighting for beautiful, tall, blonde Micol Finzi-Contini. Giorgio, her middle-class Jewish childhood friend, feels entitled to her heart. Wealth, honor, and generation of intellectual and social position have bred them into a family as proud as it is vulnerable. The rest of the Jews in the city react to Mussolinis edicts in various ways: Giorgio is enraged, his father is philosophical. But Finzi-Continis, it seems, hardly knows or cares whats going on.
